Meeting through a mutual friend on the set of an animal photo shoot, Rachel and Matt would stay in contact as acquaintances. The pair would share stories about different kinds of animals they had worked with and discovered they had similar passions for nature- especially wolves. However, it wasn't until years later that they would reconnect. It was at this time they were both at crossroads; each individually looking for life changes in their own way, and brought together again under unexpected and almost random circumstances. Growing up as the fifth generation on his family's farm, Matt always had a love for animals but was particularly fascinated with wolves and other wildlife. He began his journey working with foxes, which is what landed him on that photo shoot set. As an animal photographer with a background in dog training, Rachel had experience with wolves and other exotics prior to starting Ironwood with Matt. She has also traveled to Yellowstone to observe and photograph the Lamar Canyon Pack. Deciding to change the course of their lives, the couple agreed to pursue their passions together and form Ironwood Wolves. It was at the time a risk and a journey into the unknown- but a chance to live their lives alongside these animals and make an impact on the public through education in their own way.
